June practical- water, oil shots etc

Post by Trevor » Thu Jun 08, 2017 1:59 pm

Hi everyone just a few words on Junes practical evening.

We will be looking to shoot water droplets and magnifying the objects below them. Also we will be having a play with oil on water.

Here a are few things you should know and what to bring with you.

Camera, tripod, remote release if you have one (if not use the self timer). If you are unsure about settings etc and need assistance with how your camera works please bring your user manual with you.

I will not be shooting as I will be wanting to set up the stations and help those less experienced with their projects.

Some things to bring if you have them, as it will helps set up a few more shooting stations so the queue to shoot takes less time.

For the water droplets:
A piece of plain glass (must be clean). Something to prop the glass on (a couple of shoe boxes are ideal).
A small plain glass bowl and something to place in it. Think creative if you want or go for the usual like a packet of M&M's or skittles. This goes underneath the glass.

For the water and oil.
A plain glass dish to put the water and oil in.
This sits on the piece of glass.
Something colorful (preferably multicolored) to place underneath on the surface to have an out of focus background, think Pieces of wallpaper, gift wrap etc.

A light source is essential so if you have an external flash gun bring it with you (ensure your batteries are new) I will bring some some daylight balanced lights.

Hope this helps and here is an example of each of the subjects.

Hello everyone, just a quick follow up from my last post re tonight's practical.

I will be bringing a couple of flashes some daylight balanced lights a couple of tripods and my Macro lens for any Nikon users who want to try it out.

Please can members contribute by bringing something to photograph i.e. M&M's, Skittles, jelly babies, anything we can use to view through water droplets.

Also if any one can bring any additional equipment such as a glass sheet, something to stand the glass on, (shoe boxes are good) additional flashes different textures and coloured backdrops for the back grounds would be great.

The more we have the more stations we can set up and members can get shooting straight away without waiting for others to finish.

Look forward to seeing everyone tonight.

Further PS I can only manage one tripod so if any members have an extra one they can bring for those who dont possess one could they bring it please.

It is possible to hand hold, but its very miss and hit. ( lots of misses with very few hits :!: )

Also if any members fancy turning up 5-10 minutes earlier to help set up stations that would be a great help.

Hi Trevor,
I've got a glass bowl and some shoe boxes I can bring. I've also got some wrapping paper too.
The Boxted contingency will try and get there early to help you set up.

Hi Guys, just a quick note to say thanks for the turn out last night.

Hope you all managed to get some different images and learnt something new about your photography.

I know I enjoyed it.

Post one of your images on here as I know some of you got some really good ones.

Don't forget you crop out any bits of the glass dishes etc.

Thank you Trevor for a very enjoyable evening. Managed to get few I was pleased with and hope to attach for you to see. Focus could have been a little sharper but then I think these were all hand held. Just a case of rocking backwards and forwards until it was as sharp as my eyes would allow!!!

Excellent work Colin love image 2and 3. Yes I think the focus was a little off on the first one. But I think that the water drops is the more difficult technique to master.

Glad you enjoyed it and well done.

Well done Colin - number two is excellent. And thank you Trevor - really good to be able to do something new and creative. I attach a few of mine - being essentially abstract they allow you to play with colour to your heart's content!

I like the oil and water images best. I love these kind of shots because they are very subjective. I like the abstract quality of the water droplets.
Excellent images.

I was interested in using naturalistic backgrounds - I used grass and buttercups.

Nice idea Robert. Would be good to get say a buttercup flower reflected in miniature within a bubble! I like your mass of tiny bubbles. Phil

Thanks Colin and Trev for you comments. I think I agree that the oil on water ones make for good composition though the glycerine ones also have their appeal.

Thanks for sharing Robert, the format us good, I would say it's just a little flat and maybe a levels boost would just bring up the contrast a little? Otherwise nice composition and an effective image. Trevor

Hi Robert hope you don't mind but I had a quick play with your image and did just a basic levels adjustment. Trevor

Thanks for the variety of comments on my image. I do like a bit of complexity! I'm generally more interested in why someone captured an image, or found an image satisfying than I am about how the image was taken, though I continue to be impressed by the sheer technical quality of may of the images produced in the club - it does encourage me to get better. Trevor, you are quite right, a bit of enhancement certainly lifts the image, and thanks for making the effort; I had a go myself (attached).

Some of the oil on water images remind me of Benoit Mandelbrot's fractal images (which are largely generated by particular types of mathematical equation.) The have some fractal properties which come from having lots of bubbles with a range of sizes. Also, I particularly liked Colin's middle picture - don't know why, but it makes me smile - how can an image that abstract be funny?

Hi Trevor and everyone
I really enjoyed the evening and learnt a lot from you and Gwynn (thank you).
I have attached a couple of my shots and considering I've never done it before I was quite pleased. Thanks for the focusing tip Trevor!

Good stuff Ian, I think I recognise some of your bubbles!! Interesting to see how varied our images are using the same material base. Colin
